Engagement Overview

DBXLABS is seeking a senior-level Cloud Database Architect (Consultant) to lead complex enterprise database migration and modernization initiatives, with a primary focus on Oracle to PostgreSQL transformations.

This is a hands-on architecture and execution role intended for professionals with 15+ years of enterprise database experience and a proven track record delivering production-grade migrations from: Oracle Database to PostgreSQL. The consultant will be responsible for architecture design, migration execution oversight, performance engineering, and production cutover governance.

Scope of Work

1. Migration Assessment & Architecture

  • Conduct deep-dive assessment of Oracle environments (schemas, PL/SQL, dependencies)

  • Define migration strategy: re-platform vs. re-architecture

  • Identify risk areas, performance constraints, and compatibility gaps

  • Produce detailed migration architecture documentation

2. Schema & Code Transformation

  • Convert and refactor PL/SQL to PL/pgSQL

  • Redesign indexing, partitioning, and query execution strategies

  • Optimize data types and relational modeling for PostgreSQL

  • Establish performance baselines and benchmarking criteria

3. Cloud-Native Deployment Architecture

Design and implement PostgreSQL architectures on:

  • Amazon Web Services (RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, HA, read replicas)

  • Microsoft Azure (Azure Database for PostgreSQL)

  • Google Cloud Platform (Cloud SQL, AlloyDB)


Responsibilities include:

  • High availability and replication design

  • Backup and disaster recovery configuration

  • IAM integration and access controls

  • Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or equivalent)

  • Cost and performance optimization

4. Data Migration & Validation

  • Design migration pipelines (logical replication, CDC, batch migration)

  • Implement automated data reconciliation frameworks

  • Conduct performance and concurrency testing

  • Lead production cutover and rollback planning

  • Provide hypercare support post go-live

5. Governance & Advisory

  • Provide executive-level technical recommendations

  • Participate in steering committee meetings as needed

  • Mentor internal database teams

  • Establish migration standards and best practices


Required Experience

  • 15+ years in enterprise database engineering

  • Extensive experience with Oracle architecture, tuning, and PL/SQL

  • Deep PostgreSQL performance engineering expertise

  • Demonstrated success leading multi-terabyte Oracle → PostgreSQL migrations

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Query plans and optimizer behavior

    • Locking and transaction models

    • Replication strategies

    • Partitioning and indexing

    • Concurrency and workload isolation

  • Experience in production cloud database environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
